So as a lot of u know I have a softie tank crammed with zoas, palys etc

Yesterday i caught my naso eating a zoa, and also saw the day before a sailfin wiping out a colony of blue clove polyps

They get feed a lot, mysis, brine, nori, pellets, flakes. So i was thinking a lack of grazing space, as there is so much coral. And too much coral being too much of a temptation ?

My Powder Brown Took out my Purple Play's as well. A huge colony of them too! Maybe some tangs just like softies?? I'm hearing about it more and more often nowdays.

Maybe Tangs are NOT as reef safe as everyone thinks they are?

The term "reefsafe" is also relative to the size of tank, density of corals and personality of the fish not always the species- i have seen Regal tangs devour xenia and nip other corals

Arent zoas supposed to be toxic with something called palytoxin? I never thought animals not designed to eat zoas naturally would or could eat them.

Agreed, many places dont rate tangs as reef safe at all, although i personally have found them to be fine, if housed in approriate sized tanks with sufficient swimming space and well fed on things they like more such as algae:)

not all zoas are that toxic, and its not realy well known which species are toxic and which arent. some are very potent apparently, ive never tried to test the theory personally though. i think it varies between different corals. Pallyzoanthids are said to be more toxic though

Mine were fine till now. Also had a foxface for 6months and no issues, then one day he destroyed 2 big colonies. So who knows why, i reckon temptation and abundance is the issue

Must be. I have a sailfin , scopas and foxface , and they behave. But i do feed them every different kind of ocean nutricien marine algea thats available daily. the eat like pigs when the algea comes, and again when its frozen food time every night.

....mmmm and I thought the guy at the LFS was lying to me when he said "That orange shoulder tang eats coral". Interesting and very nice of him to know his fish and be upfront about it.

So far all my tangs have been fine.
Well maybe not all, the dussumeri was a clam nipper.

My Foxface, fat and healthy, he was grazing my pincushion polys like they were nori!
    Eish!
