Soooooooo.... My dad's purple tang is taking a huge beating from the other tangs. It started about a week ago but it was just chasing him around the tank. Now the yellow tang Spears him with his scalpel and the sailfin tang pecks at him. They've been living together for about 8 years now with no problems. I thought I should just leave and they'd sort it out themselves but in the past few days he's looking really bad. His body is white where he has been attacked with the yellow tangs scalpel and his fins are looking very ragged.

Should I try catching him?
Since the tank is about 1500litres what's the best way to catch it?

I would remove it, else it most likely will be dead by next weekend.

In a big tank, use 2 pieces of glass. Put them towards on side of the tank, and use them like a sliding door to section off that part of the tank. Wait for the purple to be in the smaller section and then close the door behind him.

Then you only need to strip one part of the tank, and not all of the tank.

Unfortunetly the YT has come to sexual maturation (is it the larger one) and now he is going into "territory" mode. Try doing what Riaan has recommended if that doesn't work one fish might have to go :(. Good luck

eggcrate will work as well. But must be from the bottom all the way to the top so that the fish cannot get around or over.

Glass works better as the fish tend not to see the glass in the water, ends up swimming against the glass up

and down. So mush easier to catch then.

They've been living together for about 8 years now with no problems.

Ya. Before I intervened he was in the corner with the yellow and sailfin taking turns having a go at it. At least the others can't get him now while he's trapped. I've also switched the lights off.

do the tangs Sailfin and Yellow bully on the Purple Together?

If so try removing the tang that attacks the Purple the most, so the Sailfin or the Yellow.

Trying to remove the purple is just going to stress it out more, also you could sump the Yellow and Sailfin and once things have settled for the Purple, move a bit of the rockwork around if possible, and add them again to the DT, If I were you I wouldn't move the Purple, it may do more harm if he is weak already.

I could try and catch the yellow but I thought it would be easier to catch the purple as it is weak. I've tried so far with no luck. It just goes into its cave and to get in there I'll have to break a 30+cm red Monti off. Will try tonight at feeding time. They seem to have calmed down with the lights off

you could try the old mirror trick as well, the yellow and the Sailfin will spend their energy chasing the busy reflections in the mirror whilst the purple can carry on as usual

imo, this issue will not go away, unless you remove the yellow and sailfin for about 2 days, put them in the sump, let them calm down,
the voilence is coming from the yellow tang as the PT is the probably the same size shape as the yellow, the Sailfin is just picking sides lol..

my yellow tang as much as i loved him, was a shit! put yellow in the sump for a few days, i think that will sort him out...

lights off is just going to annoy the rest of the tank, corals etc, so try remove the problem not make more problems, let us know how it goes

try to catch the fish at night after lights out. Fish are lethargic, easy to catch. Even with hands.

What was the outcome @TaahirS,

Yellow in the sump, i would nkt sump the purple tang, as then the yellow will just get more "territorial" and when you put the PT back, it will kill it this time!
