Hi, I am in the process of getting all the goodies together for my new tank. Which I will start setting up hopefully next month as I am moving to a bigger house.

After much reading and also having both a 1.2m and a 2.0m marine tank on and off over the last 10 years. I have decided that the best size tank IMO is 1200mm x 600m x 500m (LxWxH)

I have been the MH route on my old 2M tank but have decided that T5's is the way I want to go forward.

I have already got a DIY system set up which will house 6 x 54w T5's, what I would like to know is the below the ideal light wise or should I change things. The idea is to have the tank as an island viewable from all four sides.

    1 - Actinic+
    2 - Aguablue+
    3 - Aquablue+
    4 - Aqua Pink
    5 - Aquablue+
    6 - Actinic+

    Thanks

This link here is very useful wrt T5s. The site was done by one of the T5 lighting guru's (The Grim Reeper) on reefcentral.

    Reef Aquarium Lighting - Welcome

Suggestion for your tank depending on how blue you want it is as follows. Interesting point to note is that whilst the PAR in bluer halides may not be that great, PAR on bluer T5s is still impressive - see the link.

    1. Blue
    2. ATI Purple Plus or Fiji Purple
    3. Blue
    4. Daylight
    5. Blue
    6. Blue

Agreed- I must admit, I find light bulb naming very confusing- blue plus= white. Actinic plus= blue. Very strange

Looks good. I would change the configuration slightly so that you get a little mors blue in the centre of the tank.

    1 Aquablue+
    2 Actinic+
    3 Aquablue+
    4 Aquapink
    5 Actinic+
    6 Aquablue+

Thanks Nemos, I also intend to try and bunch then together as much as possible and try make the hood about 450mm wide over the 600mm wide tank. Bearing in mind that the tank is 500mm deep, how high should the hood be above the tank? Also what would you suggest as the light time I will group 1+2, 3+4, 5+6.

i have my globes 5cm above the water and no temp issues, giesemann can penetrate 80cm deep so 500mm is no prob
i just turn mine all on and all off but if you want to stage it go 2+5 1+6 3+4

Thanks Dallas, how many hours a day do you run your lights, so it is not really necessary to stage all can go on one time.

Yup you could then switch 1/6 & 3/4 together and have the blue lights 2/5 on another timer.
