t5 tubes running without ballasts

    just got hold of a t5 unit that has 4 bulbs without any ballasts.the tubes are some german brand that costs something likeR450 each.can i run the normal aquamedic-sylvania lights in here or will i have to change to external ballasts?

    More than likely the ballasts are built into the unit.

    I have some very slim T5 units with the ballast built in. The extruded aluminium base contains the ballast. It's about as thick as my index finger.

    Watch out. I stripped some of mine when they had a short. It used cheap paper as insulation. Try not to break it.

    I've got 21w fittings just like rob described & they work ok;)
