Mr Aquality, you haven't been knighted yet so I can't call you Sir :p

Please advise on the following:

I will soon be receiving my 8 x 54w T5 lighting unit.

My 4ft tank (1.2 x 0.60 x 0.60, or maybe 0.75 wide) will contain fish, LPS, maybe a plating monti or three and in about a years time an anemone.

What T5 tubes would you recommend to get the most colour out of the LPS and fish, yet still be sufficient for growth and maintain an anemone, probably an RBTA or H. magnifica?

I am pretty keen on the ATI range, stock availability now and in the new year ???

Thank You.

When redundancy becomes ridiculous...

Hey hissy (lisping sissy viper) :p calm down.

Assuming you have really good double parabolic or gullwing reflectors, active cooling,well-matched ballasts and ATI lamps.

You ONLY need
..................wait for it

4 * 39W for really good SPS, clam, LPS, anemone health.

4* 54W unit will sort 1.5L *0.6W*0.8H perfectly well, and THAT is bigger than your tank.

So, I suggest you rewire your unit , or request it wired/switched from outside inwards IN PAIRS
1-8
2-7
3-6
4-5

Happily assuming, it's like that already!

ONLY start with with the INNERMOST 4 lamps 3-4-5-6

At MOST, employ 2-7 AFTER you already have most of corals and anemone established.

You WON'T ever need 8 lamps, unless tank was 900mm WIDE

Correctly setup, 4 ATI T5, within optimised reflectors, actively cooled,well-matched ballast and evenly spaced will cover all light demands upto about 500mm WIDTH.

Anyway Nobody places corals full width, unless it's for aquaculture/sale?

ATI T5 availability - NO PROBLEM!
100's instock Until end 2008.

I can't project beyond that.

Use 2*54W Blue Plus AND 2*54W AquaBlue Spezial.

If budget is an issue, get 2 ATI, and 2 Sylvania.
FOR light-hungry species Replace Sylvania after 6months , or sooner if you can afford to.

They are better than most other Asian, European brands available.

I think so :p I've been doing some calculating and converting and some items are cheaper to buy here than over there, so I'm stocking up and taking it all with me.:)

At length, and depth.....

pm sent

Look to replacement around 15months
.....blackened ends don't affect overall performance in latest high-end lamps.
Some darken within 1 week!

eg. Replace 1 lamp at 14,15,16,17 mths.

Doing MORE lamps, frequently will be a waste of money, Spectral Power Distribution, and PAR

PLUS you may easily burn your corals.

Old ATI Lamps are serviceable ~450mm TANK
FOR ANOTHER 6MONTHS OR SO, at least.

RECOUP YOUR INVESTMENT!!!!
Use removed, older T5 on RBTA propagation tank.....:whistling:

All ABOVE except RBTA are in SA

AQuality LIVE!!! Looking for candidate hobbyfarmers

RBTA, BROODSTOCK available in 2months.

Home farm setup has begun, very smallscale.
1 tank per coral group
EXCEPT SPS from showtanks, grown out in fragtanks.

Where is this, in SA?

Ja.

Desirable species have slower growth so demand will last longer.
Also cost more, so is sustainable for local trading.
