with all the light talk I'm wondering..
    tank size L x W x H... 1800x600x650
I'm currently running two odyssey 80w quad units..
is it really necessary to run 8x80w t5 globes on this size tank
I currently only have a few softies and LPS.. no sps for the time being I'm way to inexperienced for now

I'm pretty confident only 1 unit will suffice. If it was my tank I would either run 4 x 80w tubes or 6 x 39w tubes.

    Running 8 tubes.
Other than using different color tubes to get some nice pop up color and well as good growth, I doubt you need all 8 on a tank that is only 650 high.

If you go SPS later. This 8 tube setup will work. Providing you do go for proper tubes.

    Thanks.
I will first replace 4 and keep two extra for incase.
my biggest problem is availability of the bulbs here...... at R600 each it's no joke.
and I doubt it if our sponsors would be willing to courier it for me.
but will try and find out

Not something I will courier either.
Think it would be worthwhile for you looking into replacing your setup with Leds. Each full replacement is almost R5000. 4 Replacements and you are at about R20000
That should be enough to start looking around at what is available. Initial costs on the Leds would be recovered between 2 to 3 years. Depending on the brand you choose and their price.

I had ATI T5's couriered from Cape Town to PMB before and they arrived safely, the shop packaged them tightly inside 50mm pvc pipe, quite a clever idea.

@RiaanP that is what I'm figuring also.... but 20k just on lights:censored:
I was actually hoping you guys would come up with an easy answer for example.... lights are overrated..... on you're size tank I would go with a 100 or so candles with a good reflector behind them... sps absolutely love it! :tt2:... I guess not...
@viper357 I have actually thought about that . ... good idea. was it one of our sponsors? maybe they would help me out.
except for the ridiculous price this side, there also is only three available and then it's not even a decent make

I've also been looking at LED options recently, they are REALLY expensive!

    For your size tank:

    Radion G3 x3 = 36k
    Radion G3 Pro x3 = 42k
    Zetlight 6600x2= 16k
    180W Razors x2= 19k

There is a lfs in Cape Town around the corner from me that has their own brand of led units. Looking at their website, to conservatively light your tank for softies and lps you're looking at R10 500 and if you want lights capable of any coral you're gonna need to add one more unit. So R14 000. They're pretty basic, no storm modes or anything, just on and off. I think this or DIY is the option I'm gonna go with.

if I have to spend R20K on a light for the aquarium I think I would be a divorced man..... and she will probably take the light with....
@TaahirS please send me more details on that petshops.... that sounds promising. I have contacted improved living as well for a quote and must say that they gave me a very good one.
I'm just uncertain about the quality since I have heard excellent feedback on there units but also a few negative ones.
but for that price quoted I'm willing to give it a go..... maybe supplement it with a t5 if necessary

Yeah its all in the packing - i had some 80W T5 tubes shipped from the UK to Durban as AD had no stock & they were all in 1 piece on arrival.
Outside packaging was cardboard made into a triangle shape

    "3white, 2, blue, 1 actinic/purple would be good"

pity you not in cape town, i just replaced my ATI bulbs after a year. 8 X 80w and the old bulbs are laying waiting to go in the bin. you could have used them to start off with till you ready to replace bulb. one thing you dont realise about going bigger tank is how the price of lighting the tank increases

also 600 a bulb is ridiculous. price shouldn't be more than 500a bulb. 2 sponsors on this forum are selling them at around 480 for an 80W: perkies and reef aquatics

If u have 2 units I'd just turn one off for a while and if u happy with the colour then all good. For softies and lips it will b fine. Else take 2tubes out of 1unit and try running with 6 tubes

    my combination is
    2 X aqua blue special
    2 X blue plus
    2 X coral plus
    one actinic
    one purple plus

last year i had 3 blue plus and only one coral plus, with the new combo there is more of a purple tinge which i really like. no scientific reason @Blue Reefer sent a link to a youtube clip which really helped

i think it may be this one
