Apart from being the local Sea Rescue Station Commander, I also swim in the sea and enjoy its bounty. It is possible that one of us MASA members, a friend or family member might be in need to the services of Sea Rescue one day.:yeahdude: Here is an opportunity to do good, at very little cost to us .

For the second year running NSRI has received a nomination for bravery and excellence in the CENTRUM GUARDIAN PROJECT.This nomination was for the incredible rescue of a school boy from the treacherous, angry and violent rip current off Swartvlei Beach, Sedgefield in January this year. What started off as a fun day in the sun for Ruan and his fellow De Bult boarding school peers narrowly escaped tragedy and the loss of a child had it not been for the bravery, strength, skill and dogged determination of the NSRI’s experienced rescue swimmer, Torsten Henschel and his fellow crew members. Torsten dug deep and against what seemed liked impossible circumstances, got to Ruan in the nick of time, thus preventing another drowning statistic and worse still, a family mourning the loss of their son. When asked how he did it, Torsten replied “I am a father”…..

NSRI is the only Emergency response and rescue service manned entirely by unpaid volunteers up for nomination this year. Our volunteers are highly trained men and women who are right up there on a par with the professional rescue organizations throughout South Africa. Our aim is to win Centrum Guardian in 2012 and bring the trophy back to the Garden Route! Progress to the final four and the ultimate winner is governed by VOTES. NSRI is a Non-Profit Organisation and is constantly striving to raise funds. A cash prize of R55 000 is on offer, and should Torsten receive the votes and ultimately the first prize, this money will be used at the Wilderness Station to replace the crumbling station floor. There are two rounds of voting, and the competition is stiff, so we trust and encourage you to vote and ask that you get your family and colleagues to do the same!

To view the enactment of this amazing rescue and the bravery of this young boy Ruan, who had the tenacity to put himself back into the water for the re-enactment of the rescue and show testament to his trust and faith in Torsten and his crew, watch Ruda Landman present the Centrum Guardian Project on SABC 3 on 16 August at 22h10 and 17 August at 10h00.

HOW TO VOTE: Sms the word “STAMINA” to 33123 - R1.50/sms - each sms ensures the Station receives .20c (free sms bundles do not apply) OR vote ONLINE at no cost at www.centrumguardian.com – navigate to “STAMINA” (10 free votes per e mail address). First round voting closes on 30 September and the final four will be announced on the 4 October. PLEASE FOLLOW NSRI’s progress on the Centrum Guardian website or on SABC 3 – we aim to reach the final four – then would ask you to PLEASE vote again to ensure that we are the winners of Centrum Guardian 2012! Second round voting open 4 October and closes on 7 October, winners announced at a gala evening on 9 October.
