    Hi,

Im starting out with Marine tank for the 1st time.
I was given a HOB skimmer(ViaAqua) to use for my 1.2m tank
also got the Atman EF 4 external filter
    Biological filter
some pumps aswell, not sure of the specs as yet, will confirm later.

My question is,will i need a sump or can i run my tank without one?
what will be the pro's and cons of this.
If needed, where can i get a sump made?

sorry if these are answered elsewhere on the forum.

Try add a sump, it has many benefits that I'm sure Keyaam will explain to you and increases water volume.

a sump really dsoes improve the quality of water and the way you can filter it. Its also extremly uselful at hiding equipment and a great place to add biological filtrations (dsb, macro algaes and the like). In short I would seriously hesitate to start a tank without one

Well you only need to return 4-5 times total water volume, so a 1500L/p pump taking in to acc head loss maybe 2000L/H will be ok, any LFS or hardware store should have water pumps this size, and then your sump will make the total volume more depending on how big your sump is.

maj work on as large a sump as you can (as in length wise) but just as important is to look at the VOLLUME of a sump. remeber in the event of a power failure your return stops working and the overflow will drain down to the sump, you ahve to ahve suffiucient capsity to be able to handle this. Make sence?

Not a stupid question. There are a few ways of building an overflow. As i told you we can discuss it tomorrow. Your return can go over the tank.

maj it would be uselful for you to pop round to keyaam and see his tank while it gets set up (if he will have you :)), its always good to see how these things are set from the start and you will learn alot about possible over flows and returns, how to place sumps, how to get tanks level etc etc. best way to learn :)
