Hi guys, I am building a aio tank. I have a eheim Magee heater and a big protein skimmer. Can I just have a protein skimmer and filter floss as filtration. I will be running carbon and gfo in a reactor.

My tank is 240liters and stock will be:
    A mandarin
    A yellow tang
    A pair of clowns
    A pair of Bangai cardinals
    A lawnmower blenny

The skimmer is a jebo 182-II

Yes it is possible but you going to have a built up of nitrates. You need something to break no3 down.

Im not sure the layout of the tank. can you maybe tell us the layout? But for no3 there are many options. biocubes, bioballs, carbon dosing, matrix. those are the ones that come to mind.

You can run as is and if you do a 10-20% water change every week should be able to keep nitrate low. Remember that nitrate is eventually released as nitrate bubbles at the end of the nitrogen cycle so if the tank is properly cycled and there is no bio-overload then it is perfectly possible to run without any chemical filtration... but to be safe and make life easier you can run a small bubble magus bio-pellet reactor, it doesn't need to be big at all surprisingly

With a jebo protein Skimmer I don't think carbon Dosing will be a good option.

Well, I talked to Gary and he will ask the supplier for a skimmer rated my tank size. I will then run bio-pellets

There shouldn't be any problem, I did it for years. I was running a Red Devil Skimmer rated for 1000l on my 600l tank. Jebo is reliable, I lived in China for 4 years and they were almost all you can get... but just to clarify, who said anything about carbon dosing?

    Bio pellets = carbon dosing

Hmmmm, mine are not carbon dosing, they are denitrifying bio-pellets, no carbon involved. ...I'll have a look when I get home for accuracy's sake though, don't want to mislead anyone! Give me 2 hours :)

Carbon like the black stuff is very different to carbon dosing.

Carbon dosing is using things like vinegar, bio-pellets, vodka, bio cubes etc. To control nitrates.

Yea, that I know, just could swear the pellets are not dosing carbon, will really have to check but as you say I may well be wrong.

Non-the-less, even if it is carbon dosing, he could run it together with the skimmer as long as the skimmer is not rated to the exact size of the tank and is a bit larger. That should cope. As for Jebao, never had a problem with their products :)

I would run bio media rather than bio pellets

    @SAReefer cool.
@Jacojs no, bio pellets you run in a reactor and they tumble. Bio media you put in the sump (biocubes, bioballs)

Well, I got proper confused! I mistranslated the Chinese on the packet haha! They are indeed carbon based polymers. So yup, been carbon dosing all this time! Oh well, it all works great together haha :D
