I recently purchased a 6foot tank with sump etc etc , second hand stuff.
the sump has 4 compartments. the second will be used for the skimmer as the first is too small for it. the last will be used for the return pump.

what do i use for the 1st and 3rd compartments. at the moment it has sections in the 1st compartment seperated by egg crate ahe there is filter floss / bioballs and the third compartment has what looks like to me very large crushed coral !!!

i thought in the first compartment to use at the bottom phosphate remover , then carbon and at the top filter floss ...

what u guys think
 
take all those bio balls out of there.po4 remover and carbon will go well there in a stalking!
 
I think it would be better to use PO4 and carbon after the skimmer?

1st live rock, 2nd skimmer, 3rd macro algae and 4th return - I take it your dsb will be in tank?

ANY REASON ??? also is it not better to have some sort of mechanical filtration (filter floss) in the first compartment for the stuff thats coming from the display ???
 
I am actually buying a second sump now, also with 4 compartments. I's like its said above, remove bio balls first - it's a nitrate factory.

I'm actually tagging on this one, because I'll also havbe an open compartment.

First sump:
1 A receiving chamber, where heaters are.
2 Then a chamber with LR and water flowing from top to bottom thru it.
3 Last big compartment will house skimmer.
This will then have a gravity fed overflow pipe to the second sump.

Second sump:
1 LR - Refugium
2 DSB with macro algae
3 Open (don't know yet what to do)
4 Return Pump

What can we do with our open compartments?

Not too sure remember Ivan saying it was better to do it that was as the skimmer will have a chance to remove the bulk? ? ?
