The general rule for flow over a deep sand bed is around 5 - 10X turnover of the tanks volume. I may be wrong but the flow should be rather slow. The water surface over the dsb should be calm....

What is your total system volume, the pumps rated lph and what is the height difference between your return pump and the return into the tank?

Total sys volume 474 and height 1.2m from return pump to tank

So if the return pump is rated for 2000Lph. Then you would get around 4 times turnover before head loss. Don't know how much the head loss on you pump is for 1.2m but at that height your pump might only be producing 1300Lph and then you would only get around 2.5 times turnover. Might be a bit low...

That would work. Lets just wait for one of the guru's to reply, because I'm not sure if the calculation of flow is for total system volume or just sump volume. I'm pretty sure it is on total system volume. I'm using a 2400Lph pump on a 350L tank and my flow over my dsb is really calm, almost looks stagnant...

The flow through the sump over the DSB should be 3 - 5 times total system volume. It needs to be slow for the skimmer to remove more waste and for the DSB to do the nitrate reduction effectively. 3000l/h should be fine considering you would probably get around 2000l/h at the tank inlet.

Look on the box the graph that display the pump output.

You must check on the height of 1.2m that the pump delivers somewhere between 1422-2370 L/h. That is your system volume of 474 * 3 and 5.

Your 2000L/h might be sufficient, if it delivers around 1500l/h at 1.2 height. Else a 2500 should be more that enough.
