    Welcome to MASA

 - this page doesnt have enough space on it for all that :p

The guru's here can give you all that info, Especially RiaanP on DSB's .

Basically. in a nutshell, a DSB hosts the bacteria u need to complete the Nitogen Cycle, meaning aerobic and anaerobic bateria lives, and does there job there.

Ammonia gets broken down into nitrites and then to nitrates.

Here is a cycle eg .

Usually a sump has 3 chambers.

    1 - skimmer
    2 - DSB area
    3 - return pump

The centre DSB area can be used for a few different options. If big enough, a DSB with fine sand 15cm deep.
You can also keep live rock in there with a small flow pump, or a little bit of sand, live rock and macro algae as a refugium (area for pods and other critters to grow and populate away from predation)
You can put just macro algae like Chaetomorpha in there with a light. You can also put a NP pellet reactor in there.
As you can see there are a lot of options, but please research each one and then decide what you want to do as you need to make it user friendly for yourself. Budget obviously plays a part as well.
Go look through the forums on mechanical, chemical and biological filtration.

You don't have to have a sump, it is just better to have one as all your equipment can also be put in there, like heaters, protein skimmers, chemical filtration like carbon bags, phophate remover, etc.
You can look at a hang-on skimmer, Reefoctopus makes a lekka one and not too expensive. They also make overflow boxes if you still want a sump and don't want to drill the tank. Ask a sponsor close to you for prices on Reeftek overflow boxes and Reeftek or Reefoctopus hang-on skimmers.

you will regret it eventually if you dont have a sump.. Get your skimmer first or atleast know what skimmer you are going to get then design the sump. Take your time and dont rush

Yip, check out the tanks on this forum. Sumps are in use by almost all of them, except some of the nano tanks. There are a lot of benefits from running with a proper sump, and especially skimmer.

you still have a lot of time before the tank is cycled. Just get a cheap little tank for the sump, decide on a skimmer then get the glass baffles cut to spec and polished for you from a glass place then a big tube of silicone and you are done. Pretty simple to do
