    Hi guys,

I finally decided to add sump to my RSM130 ,
What i decided to do was to add overflow filter to the back
Here is what i will do:

Here are a couple of pictures of the design i'm planning to do,

The middle chamber will be for DSB and frags (Not sure if its suitable ) and chaeto.

The inlet chamber for filter sock and live rocks
    [IMG]

The water overflows from skimmer chamber and over flows to the outlet chamber from a different corner

And the front left chamber will be used for Auto top up.

I really appreciate all your inputs, on what you think about the height of each chamber,
The actual sump will be 50cm x 40 cm,

So the DSB chamber is 20cm x 40cm

    ATO chamber is 15cm x 15cm

    Inlet chamber is 15cm x 15cm

    Outlet chamber is 15 cm x 25cm

    skimmer chamber 15cm x 25 cm

    and all heights are 40cm

Hi, there are a couple of things you would need to consider:

    1. Seeing that it's a internal skimmer - The water height in the sump could play a major role. Depending on how you plan on mounting the skimmer, the water depth could be a problem. Look at what is the recommended water level of the skimmer you intend on adding to your setup;)

    2. You would also need to consider the amount of water that will flow into your sump during a power outage. The last thing you would want to happen is that your sump overflows. You could manage this with the water level in your last chamber (return pump), but I prefer to have more than enough capacity in my sump . Remember - The water volume in your skimmer will also add to the entire water volume in your sump during a outage.

I prefer to have my skimmer/water level at roughly half the sumps capacity to give you an indication.

thanks a lot for the inputs,
I will definitely lower those overflow chambers,
The skimmer i have is the Tunze 9001 which comes with a magnet, so doesn't need much space, the chamber for the skimmer should be good enough,

also with the water shifting laterally you might get dead spots in the sump so be carefull of that

Will you be able to get the skimmer in and out the cabinet? Chamber is very tight. and not only the cup, the complete skimmer for maintenance.

Rather combine rock and skimmer chamber in one bigger chamber. Can put rocks on a pile next to the skimmer if needed. At least you be able to lift the skimmer out.

The skimmer i have in the picture is just the design, the actual one i use is the tunze 9001 ,
Which is very small and easy to take out, that wouldn't make any problem
    [IMG]
The chamber i've planned for the inlet and rocks is 15cm x 15cm and the chamber for skimmer and overflow is 25cm x 15 cm.
and also the ATO chamber is 15m x 15cm and the outlet chamber is 25cm x 15 cm.
    what you guys think?

If you can upgrade the skimmer to TS1 or similar size, that would be better.

I know, i didn't have a plan for sump, and i invested 1200 on the skimmer,
its doing a good job for that size tank, maybe later i'll consider upgrading.

One more tiny thing I've noticed is that you don't have a ball/gate valve on the overflow pipe. Not beeing able to raise the water level in your overflow box might mean you'll have to content with a bit of noise. Leave it as is for now but consider adding a valve if it is a noisy affair.

I see you've added a union. Makes dissassembly so much easier:)

    either that or a Durso.

Both are for noise reduction. Durso is the better option as something can block the gate valve.
and do not use ball valves. They are extremely difficult to set correctly, gate valve is sooo much easier, although more expensive.

Agree about the Ball valve. Durso's can also be blocked:tt2: The trick is not to get anything to your overflow box in the first place.

Great! thanks guys, the picture is not actually my tank, its just the same system i want to implement
But will look into both Durso and gate valve to see which one is available easily
