While I am bored lying on the beach I am thinking what can I do next on my tank.

One thing that annoys me endless is the noise of the return pumps etc in the sump. Besides that I want to add some water volume to the tank and make water changes easier.

To do this I was thinking. I have a 300l drum outside (behind the tank about 1m) which is my fresh salt water drum. Next to that I have a 150l mixing drum and next to that a 150l RO drum.

What I was thinking is making the 300l drum my sump. Then using gravity in the "new sump" to do a 100l water change a week (I have a drain next to the drums). Ill use the 150l mix drum to top up the "sump".

This I know how to do and it will work. I have a spare bubble blaster HY5000 lying in the sun doing nothing as well as the biggest Halia return pump so getting water around shouldn't be a issue ....

My question is how do incorporate the skimmer into this?

I could go chuck noris cut a hole in the lid of the drum (think big water drum with a round lid) have the skimmer cup outside through that hole?

I could get rid of my Vertex alpha and get something else for an external skimmer? Would it be sufficient enough to just have the external skimmer simply plumbed next to the big drum of water?

I have big enough heaters with enough probes to power a space station so heat, topping up an all the other stuff shouldn't be an issue for me.

I am really asking three things:

    1. Will the drum idea work?
    2. Which skimming option is the better of the two
    3. I was thinking of hacking the lid I the drum and put clear perspects on it and have some Cheto Etc in the sump. What would you guys recommend running in the sump - I DON'T currently (which doesn't mean I can't) run any LR in my sump. Last time I had LR in my sump it became a nutrient trap.

    In my sump currently:

    1. Vertex Alpha skimmer (chamber 1)
    2. About 4l of bio cubes 3l titanium chamber 1)
    3. Vertex 2kg Phosphate Reactor chamber 2)
    4. Vertex 2kg carbon reactor chamber 2)
    5. Two pumps - tunze silent return pump - some pump I got from Nathan which is silent 4000l powers both reactors. chamber 2
    6. 2x 300w titanium heaters
    7. Probes:
    2x temp
    2x salinity
    2x level
    2x Ph
    1x radox

Spare kit I have lying around:

More probes - salinity, ph, temp.
MP10 I think one or two dunno where they are but I know I have them somewhere.
About 5 Seio flow pumps from medium to biiiiiig
Bubble master - HY5000 huge pump
Halia return pump - don't know the model I know it's the biggest one.
    X 4 halia 6550's return pumps.

I am brain storming here so would appreciate the help!!

just making it more difficult and complex, go simpler IMHO, get a DC pump, super quiet and i get 10000L from it

Dude, just build a sump room, or a shed in the back yard, or a small sump room outside the house... but just not the drums:facepalm:

biggest issue would be the temperature drop outside during winter. Your heaters will run 24/7, each being 300W. eish

If you can isolate it, in a little isolated Wendy house or garden shed, yeah, you can do it.

What is the winter morning temperatures where you stay. I know sometimes the dog water bowls do freeze over in and around Joburg...

OK, it will be running water, But ever stuck your hand into a pond during the winter?

Or tried to get something out of a pond that is 1m deep? I "convinced" my son to take a swim in the pond to retrieve the rock.... End of July.... he did it, but never will he do it again.

O yeah, take up MistyOrange offer...

and in the summer, no sun must ever shine on that drum, else it will overheat and your chiller would then run permanently.
