I'm planning a new sump. Just a question on chambers needed.

First, a place for overflow to fall in.
Next chamber, place for Protein Skimmer.
    Then a deep sand bed.
Set of baffles - to get rid of the bubbles
And the last chamber for the return pump.

Is the first chamber really needed? Or can the overflow spill over directly into the same chamber as where the Skimmer stands? Maybe with some plate underneath to break the flow direction.

That sounds perfect Riaan. Try and make the DSB area as big as possible.....
And NO - the 1st chamber is not really necessary. You can have your down-pipe from your tank directly into the chamber where the skimmer sits.... this is actually better....

Agree with Jaquesb, skimmer in first chamber and DSB as big as possible and no less than 15cm deep with fine sand ;)
