    Hi guys,

Just looked in my tank this am and found my leather coral all slumped and shrivelled, with none of it's thingies extended.

What are the signs to look for when trying to identify whether it's just sulking, or something is actually wrong with it?

It's in an area of reasonable flow, and is midway up the tank. All parameters are fine (tested this morning) and the only thing that needs fixing is the water level - need to do an RO top-up run.

One thing that did happen last night (while I was at the rugby) is that the skimmer all of a sudden started skimming VERY wet, spewing all its bubbles back into the tank (it's a hang-on skimmer) which might have "stressed" it. But surely overnight it would have recovered?

Sounds like your leather has shed or is shedding. A few questions first though.

    1) Has the leather showed its polyps and looked healthy up to now?

    2) Is there a slime/skin/mucus coming off the leather?

    3) If you wave your hand in the water just in front of the coral does a powder dust come off of the coral?

    4) What type of leather coral is it?

A pic would also help us a little.

OK from what you tell me it sounds like it is shedding. The shed has gotten into the water column and the skimmer has tried to remove the waste. Keep emptying the skimmer until it settles. The coral should start to open in a day or so.

However considering that the coral has only being in your tank for 3 days keep a eye out for the coral to start to disintegrate. It will start to go powdery. Hence my question (3)

And I presume disintegration is a bad sign... What to do if it happens?

Yup it is a bad sign and steps to save by means of fragging and relocating to a stable system may be necessary. But now that you are aware of the symptoms you have a head start and good chance of saving the coral if it deteriorates. However i suspect that the coral is merely shedding.

Should it deteriorate post an urgent help thread and myself or one of the MASA members will walk you through the process of saving what is left.

Cool... I'm sure it's just shedding, as you said. It was fully extended yesterday, so I'm holding thumbs...

confirmed - leather was sulking. Back to full health now, and almost full extension of polyps...
