What substrate is the best to buy for a mix reef?
And how many live rock should I put in my 500lt tank ? Is there a set of guidelines or is it personnal preference.

    Thanks.

    personal preference.

I got lots of rock. Give move than enough hiding places for the fish. I've seen big tanks with minimal rocks that looked super cool.

for substrate, aragonite or playsand. Just do not do the sugar fine aragonite as it tends to blow all over very easily.
Playsand you need to wash like in a hundred times to get it nice and clean.

If I buy live rock must it be kept in water or can it be dried for later use

If you dry it, you will kill all the beneficial things on it. IN which case you might as well buy dry rock

You can buy a few pieces of live rock to seed the dry rock.

    yeah.
    Like in kiddies playsand.

You can buy bags at Reggies, or at some garden nurseries. Reggies is just a lot more expensive.

But you need to wash the sand like a 100 times.

Here is a picture from years ago. My kid washing the sand. He turns 18 this year. Eish
