    Hi fellow reefers

so im busy planning my new reef tank and just realised how expensive things are:(

my new display will be 2.4 meters long and 600mm wide.
i was wondering if it is possible to use playsand as a substrate, as aragonite is very expensive, and u can imagine how much i would need to fill this baby up.
i was also thinking if its possible to use the playsand as a bottom layer and then adding a layer of aragonite on top of that:whistling:

will this work, what will the advantages/disadvantages be?

    any help app...
    thnx in advance.

    you can use playsand.
Only recently did I move over to aragonite.

    Just wash it properly.

You don't have to put in layers, you can just mix them together

No, the grains on pool filter sand are HUGE compared to play sand. Go to a toy shop and get play sand, it's the same price as pool filter sand anyway.

As RiaanP said, wash it, wash it again and then wash it another 4 times :) You will be surprised how dirty it is but the time taken to wash it properly is going to save you headaches with algae etc. later on.

As silica is a major ingredient in glass , I would feel safe to say that the chances are as good as your tank leaching silicates into the water, not a stupid question though , I have heard that story a zillion times

You can buy "pool" silica sand at any granular size. The normal one is 1-2 mm you need the .05 -1mm one. Play sand is normally < .5mm and a PITA to clean.

Wasn't aware you could get pool filter sand in different sizes, I just know the stuff I got at builders was pretty large and tore the crap out of my hands when I had to change it :( Changing 80kg's of sand is not fun......

If you get play sand, what do you wash it with? Salt water? R/O water? Tap water?

Bud in all honesty you do not need any substrate at all. It all depends on your filtration. If you o not have the funds to buy aragonite right now, postpone the purchase untill you do. Add little bits as funds become available.

Once you go playsand, it is a PITA to remove and redo your tank. You will get algae and cyano issues.
