    Hey Ladies and Gents,

I inspired to start off a new marine tank. Done a bit of shopping around at some pet stores too, basically what was said is that its better starting off with new equipment then buying over someone elses issues. I find this unfavourable as these startup kits are pricey (R5000 up). I'm basically looking to start off small and cheap or maybe buy second hand to get to grips with how this marine systems works. can anyone put me in the right direction ???

Awaiting your experienced feedback ? :)

A VERY WARM WELCOME to MASA, Rabbit! Great to have you on-board!

Have a read through the URL link in my signature, about "Starting a marine aquarium"...

You can also build a tank yourself, if you are good at DIY work, OR buy a custom built tank (like the type that is usually used for freshwater tanks), and just have it drilled for the overflow pipe that goes down to the sump....

We always try and ask MASA members to try our sponsors first - so, close to you, you have Pet's Aquaria in Somerset West - if you go to the Forum page on MASA (click on the Forums URL) and scroll down to Sponsors, you should see Pet's Aquaria on the list.... Click on their URL to get to their web-page.

Other than that - read as much as you can, and ask as many questions as you can, BEFORE you spend a cent!

Also - before you buy anything, get a quote, and come to us here on MASA to ask our opinions. MASA has more than 3000 members who would be willing to assist you in telling you if you need the stuff on the quote, and whether you don't - and if the pricing is ok'ish - or not....

Good luck! And enjoy the journey! It's an awesome hobby!

    HI and welcome

I disagree with this as people sell good second hand equip at giveaway prices and not because they are having issues. LFS are trying to make money not give u things for free hence they will say the above. U could buy a complete 2nd hand setup for 1/4 what it would cost u brand new possible even less. u just need to be patient and have the cash

    Hey and welcome to MASA!

I will deffinetley disagree with the statement that you can only buy new stuff. Allot of the equipment in our hobby don't easily loose their operating strength and buying second hand is much much cheaper. Just remember when buying second hand to ask all that is needed. How old is it?Why are you selling? Can you see it work? etc, etc. You can alos look at the " for sale" topic. Just go to forum and then scroll down to "for sale" then click and there you will find complete tanks, hardware and life stock to buy for half the prise that you get at a shop.

Yeah - R1400 for that tank is a good price. I think that they are new around R2500 or something....

BUT, as I said - just take into account that you would need to do water changes at least every week, of 10 to 15%.....

I think what jacquesb is trying to say is that, the tank may be cheap but you also need to take into account the maintanance factor. So water changes are going to cost you R32.50 every week (Based on 13L (10%) water changes every week with salt water bought at a pet shop @ R2.50) then there is the dosing and RO water, then electricity. So in total you are looking at, at least R200/month just to run the tank.

HUH ? Help me understand this quickly ? Why would I need to change the water every week ? Would this be initially or would it be something permanent ? Why would there be a difference in the costs ? Does pet shops normally offer cheaper rates on water if you buy the tanks at there stores ?

I would have asked these questions once i bought the tank. but i might as well ask it now. What would I need to do once I bought the tank to start off, I read the article on your site , but it seems like i need a chemical eng degree to understand half of what that guy is trying to explain :)

BURT, can I not come and chat to you ?
