    Hi Guys

I am a new member:) and i want to start a marine setup. Please can you help me with advice and guidance on how to setup a marine tank and what is the correct producers.

I am purchasing a 500liter tank, I want to start off with a live rock tank first, I have got a quote on equipment. Please can you advise me on the correct protein skimmer, return pump, lighting, power heads and if there is any other equipment I would need.

    I have been quoted on:

Aqua-medic – turbo flotor 1000 blue – needle wheel protein skimmer.

Aqua-medic ocean runner 2500 return pump

    T5 lighting – 4x 24w t5 tubes – 2 dbl 24w t5
    Ballasts

    2 Ocean prop power heads

Are these good ? do you advise on these products or can I get better products ?

Can anyone in Durban help me with a good setup and cheap prices?

    Welcome to the forum.:)
    Very good skimmer.
    very good pump
24w tubes seem to be a bit small for a 500 litre tank, what are the dimensions of your tank?

Good powerheads, very expensive though, can get cheaper options.

@viper357,not to sure at the moment. Do you recommend any size in particular? The power heads are R155 each.

The size of your tank will dictate the size of your lighting, for example, a 2ft tank will use 24w T5's, a 3ft tank will use 39w T5's and a 4ft tank will use 54w T5's. A standard 4ft tank is roughly 250 litres, so a 500 litre tank will be significantly bigger and will require more and bigger lighting, best to buy the tank first, then get the lighting afterwards.

Ok, not the same ones I was thinking of then.

    Welcome To Masa....

    I agree with @Tobes and @viper357

As far as lighting is concerned, I would wait a while... Pointless running your lights while cycling a new tank. All you do is build up algae which becomes a nuisance later to get rid of.... ;)

As far as your skimmer is concerned, the aqua medic turboflotor 1000 blue is rated for 450ltr.... for a 500ltr tank and if you go for a FOWLR system, you may need a much higher rated skimmer.... I would suggest something along the lines of a Reeftek TS-3 which is rated for 700 litres...

Of course if you let us know tank size, sump, etc it will make things easier...
