Hi, how do I start my first DSB, do I just pour in play pen sand 15 cm deep, or do I layer it cm by cm? Also read that I could seed it, is there anybody in PTA East willing to donate me a cup, Thanx

Make sure the sand is cleaned, very well. The sand must be white.

Can't see why you need to do cm by cm layering.

Seeding is important to speed up the effective filtration of the DSB

    Where in Pretoria are you?

As Warr said, make sure it is washed very clean. Also first add water to the sump without circulation, then drop the sand handsfull by handsfull. This will ensure that you do not trap air bubbles inside the sand. Else you must stirr it up properly to get all the air out.

Your welcome to get a cup from me. You do not need a lot. A baby food (purity) bottle is enough. Just bring me some to fill the hole. I suggest you should get another 2 or 3 cups from other reefers as well to get a nice varied live diversity.
