Hello have just started a 800cm reef tank - Shin Mao.
Has two 55watt 4 pin lights and one 55watt 4 pin actinic.
Hope its good enough for corals and anemones.
Been running tank for six weeks.
Put 2 clown fish in today but just keeping to one corner of tank. Not sure if ocellaris or percula

welcome fishfood, great that you have joined masa.

do you have much experience in marines or are you just starting out?

are you busy testing the water parameters, if so could you share the results with us?

marines really are a facsinating hobby, but the learning curve seems verticle at times. If you have any questions and want to know anything specific dont hesitate to ask us, we will do all we can to help you out :)

    happy posting

    Sorry 80cm.
    Will post pics soon.
Have kept a 1m marine tank before - many years ago.Had shrimps and crabs but no corals. Also kept a 18 inch tanks with seahorses successfully.
This is going to be my first attempt to keep coral and an anemone. Hope my lightings good enough. Very excited got my first 2 clowns today but they are staying in one corner of tank. Had water tested at pet shop. Everything was in correct range apparently but I have no test kits. Have good filtration and about 15kg of live rock.

Cool looking tank. Looks like you have a nutrition build-up in your tank IE: Green Hair Algae. Need to change your filtration or do more regular water changes.

Try and add a sump with DSB.

Yeah. Did the very stupid thing of using untreated tapwater for my top ups when cycling the tank. Needless to say algae was growing everywhere. Then I wisened up and used Aquasafe. Since then and with the help of a few hermit crabs algae has almost dissapeared. Looks much worse in picture than what it really is. I have some cuelerpa growing. Still doing well but not growing as fast now that I'm treating the tapwater.

You need to stop using tapwater - FULLSTOP

You must either buy RO water from your LFS or get an RO unit and make your own water.

If there is only one change you should make to your setup and husbandry regime, it is this.

    Welcome to MASA!!

As warr said, stop using tap water! It's going to hurt you in the long run.

    Thanks for the advice.
I can get RO water from my usual pet shop but how much does a RO unit cost?
Why is using tap water so bad?

Tap water has loads chemicals in it that will fuel algae growth and cyanobacteria plus your corals will not be happy. RO units strip everything out of the water so when mixed with synthetic salt you have now replicated seawater with all the correct chemicals and trace elements.

If I remember correctly you could get a 3 stage unit form Dorry Pets for R 1,350.00

    They are a sponsor

Any decent LFS that stocks Marine fish will have RO units
