    Hi gents and ladies

My dad got these two starfish from the Portugese Islands this morning. He placed them in his sump for the time being, as we need to establish what they are, and whether they are reef safe.

Can anyone ID please, and if possible, identify if reefsafe or not. Thank you in advance. ;)

Hi Jaco - the 2nd one (the big red one) is a giant cushion star?

Thanks, reefsafe? I have looked and rather think the yellow is a Knobby Starfish?

Yes, the cushion star is/should be reef-safe. BUT, aren't these starfish a wee bit big for your dad's tank, Jaco?

Yes JB, I also think so. He only has a 1.2m tank, but its quite heavily stocked with LR and coral, so there is VERY little roaming space. The red star is about the size of your hand spread open, and the yellow is a bit smaller than that.

I told him to keep them in his DSB, which is a 3foot dsb, but even that might be too small. What do you suggest?

Yeah Jaco - the DSB should be a good place for the starfish. At least they will have a lot to eat there.
