    Hi Guys

I want to build my 1st reef tank

I would like to know if one can overlap the glass over the steel

Tank base is to be 812 x 512

Note that i will build as Tank style B where the base is smaller and glass overlaps it.

    Stand is 800 x 500 (25mm squ tube)

    Total tank Size 832 x 532
    Glass is 8mm Rimless
and 12mm for base is this ok ?

Tank will sit on a 16mm wood base

PS i was thinking of placing the overflow in the middle of the tank ?

    Thanks

Not sure on the 8mm part, there is a glass thickness calculator. And you want it rimless. In my opinion, at least 10mm

Also tank got bigger footprint than the stand. Sounds like you already have the stand and glass. What about welding another frame on top of the stand, 50 by 25mm tubing, obviously with flat side upwards.

You need 16mm wider frame all around. To make up 832. So the new frame could be made with 9mm overlap to the inside and 16mm to the outside.

    Hey thanks for the info

    I have the stand already

but i would like the glass and the 16mm pannel to be flush

most people have 16mm in front of the tank

I did use the calc its said 8mm but 10mm sound better

    Hi Tidy,

16mm on either side wont be an issue if the base (wood) covers the whole length of the tank. The 12mm base on this size tank will be solid;)Just to give you an idea of my size tank. I have 1.5 * 800(W) * 650(H) tank on a 40mm square tube stand and it is rock solid:)If you want to go rimless then I would definately go with 10mm glass as I won't be happy with anything thinner for rimless. How high do you plan on going with this tank?

Based on your description of the building method, i.e. base inside the sides, you can make the tank slightly bigger than the stand ONLY if you use a thick wooden base that covers the entire footprint of the tank, as Andreas stated
