i have been reading some articles on the net on Square skimmers.....

Anyone got an opinion on this....

The very obvious argument is that the fractionation is helped by a round reaction chamber and that being square the reaction chamber would be less efficient ..... myth or fact??

Hi Neil. I have seen square glass skimmers in action. From what I have seen, it is pretty impressive.

if there were to be an ineffeciency due to the square reaction chamber logic says that a square skimmer the same size as a round one equipped for a 1000lt tank should merley be rated slightly less so in essence just make the square skimmer bigger.. :whistling: or use a slightly bigger pump.. im sure we could debate all day about this one but there would be alot of factors to prove or disprove this theory, bioloads feeding habits and waterchange routines would all need to be thoroughly explored.. just my take on it

    well a 400lt capacity Ts1 uses a OTP1000 pump (rated to 1000lt) using a needle wheel impellor

i think the following are important

impellor: needle wheel / pin wheel/ mesh wheel
pump size and diameter and height of reaction chamber when comparing a round and quare skimmer

dont forget air draw capacity of pump..

Nothing wrong with square skimmers, the Reef Octopus BH series are all square, the new Red Sea C-skim, the Deltec MCE300 and 600 skimmers, the Tunze 9002 nano skimmer, the Tunze comline DOC skimmers, the Red Sea prizm is square'ish :p and they all work, as Leslie says, if you make a square skimmer then I reckon you just need to compensate if in fact it will be any less efficient.
