General opinions for flow in a mixed reef please, how many times the tanks volume should the following flowrates be?

    sump return pump rate?

Circulation and water movement inside the tank?

    skimmer feed rate?

The flow through the filter/sump depends on the volume of water you want to process and the equipment. Also the type of filtration employed. Trickle filter, DSB, sand filters, aerobic filters. anarobic filters, carbon reactors, PO4 reactors, tec

Depends on the make and model of the skimmer.

    sump return pump rate?
i dont believe sump return rate is important, atleast 1-3 times per hour as a minimum, we basically want to take water from the DT to the filtration and back

Circulation and water movement inside the tank?
enough flow that detritus cannot settle on the open gravel or rocks, but faster flow near the surface for gas exchange and direct flow at corals. flow helps remove wastes from the coral, aids in respiration and transports food

    skimmer feed rate?
this is debatable, escobal recommends no more than twice per 24 hr, i have a slow flow rate but high bubble count, protein takes 2:30min or so to attach to a bubble, i do stand to be corrected.

check this link for skimmer theory based on non-recirc models

    Thanks dudes

Guess my situation concerning the sump is a bit complex, take any dsb etc out of the equation.
Overflowing water goes through 2 live rock bio-towers 1.7m high, return pump feeds skimmer.

No I did not plumb it or help plan it.

Are the "Bio-towers" areobic or anerobic? I asume they are trickle towers.

    What make/type skimmer?

Change it? it sounds so awesome and perfect, why would I change it? I'm only keeping SPS and those 'coral things' and stuff........:tt2::P:lol::lol:

Am working on changing it but not my money being spent and you need to plan these things before messing with a system that seems to work,

only can see one thing to be changed, skimmer should be first and not on the return, why send clean water there, skimmer is also mechanical filtration

Thanks @dallasg, appreciate the input, I don't feel I should disclose any more details however. Most reefkeepers know the basic filtration setup, mechanical first for obvious reasons.

I guess I need to address the basic before the advanced i.e flow throughput.

I don't have the best, but I can do the best with what I have first. So stupid question I guess :p
