I just saw a Huge tank that has HUGE SPS but the man has nitrates in his water column. My understanding was that Nitrates cause the SPS to die. Is this a wrong perception or does Nitrates just cause the corals not to have crazy colours?

Sps's will brown in the presence of moderate levels of nitrates as the take on zooxanthellae

Ziyaad - as Tony says - SPS do not die when there's high nitrate levels.... The zooxanthellae just becomes more and more, causing the SPS to lose their bright beautiful coloration..... and just look "Brownish"....
It is high phosphates that causes the polyps in SPS to stay retracted, and also cause the zooxanthellae to start dying off slowly......
