Just a bit of useless info some of you might find interesting :p

We are getting hit really heavy by the spammers lately, but our software seems to be managing to keep them at bay, just some stats for you...

Over the last 22 hours we have had 177 attempted new member registrations, of which only 9 were allowed through as legitimate members, quite shocking to know how hard we are getting hammered, then there is the added strain of content scrapers and hackers and all other unsavoury internet thingies trying to attack us and steal content from us, quite amazing really how any website manages to stay alive on the internet these days.

Here's a screenshot of page 6 of 12 of our log, damn spammers.

So common, I have a small onsite mail server for my company and I'm now onto my 5th massive attack from a bot net trying to log onto my pop3 server! luckily my nice firewall blocks very quickly and cleanly.

I feel your pain...earlier this week my website The Ocean Awaits You! was suspended because of spammers. They were creating profiles and embedding code into our site to send mail to our mailing lists. After a lot of safety and security features amended and changed we got our site re-opened.

    FRUSTRATING!!!

    A couple stupid questions:

1- What are they trying to steel?

2 - How do you know they are legit or not?

The send spam mail to everyone on your mail lists. So in theory they are stealing your mailing lists. Messages appear to come from you so your clients unsubscribe.

After dealing with it often, you get a feel for these.

    1. They either try to register just to post links to their websites or advertise viagra for Koekemoer, you also get what is called scrapers, these things steal your content and then sell it to unwary internet users, I'm not sure how that all works though.

    2. Their username, email address and IP address are all checked against a sort of central database called stopforumspam.com, if any of their details are on that database then their registration is stopped.

Scrapers steal content (articles etc) and this gets used in setting up "fake" websites. I'm sure sometimes you've googled for something and found you get to a site that has an article but the rest of the site is just a bunch of crap. Generally the content is just to get google to index some stuff that looks like what you want so you visit the "fake" site, it probably doesn't help you must beyond the one article then there could just be adverts etc but there could also be links trying to get you subscribed to stuff or even virus type stuff.
