What could the possible causes be for my tank water developing a sour smell within a days time?

Can you please relate the smell to something! Like sour milk, vinegar, salty, fishy or rotten egg smell. Do you run active carbon? How old Is the active carbon?
Do you have a protein skimmer? Is your protein skimmer cup clean or dirty (full or empty)?
Do you have a DSB? Has It been disturbed lately?

Bad smells Is mostly caused by some sort of decay and the smell would be different depending on curtain conditions.

Bacterial and algae blooms might also be the cause of bad smells.

EVERY reefer I know runs active carbon because It removers odd smells from their tanks. Oh and plenty of other nasty stuff too.

Check for a pump that has burned or heater or something similar.

A medium sized turbo snail died last night by the looks of it, could this be a likely cause on a 500l+ system?

No dsb only NP Pellets, large skimmer, no carbon. Smells like something from the sea that was kept in a bucket for a day or two.

I have a GHA issue currently which seems to have gotten less over the last couple of days, maybe its the algae left over matter that smells.

I'm going to do a water change and dose special blend, hopefully that will help.

A medium sized snail dying shouldn't cause too much of a concern (mini cycle maybe) but If It's the cause of the smell then the smell might linger for a few days. Try the water change and special blends If the smell Is still there after a week then add some active carbon.
