    Hi guys,

I've been browsing around Rapidled's site and am itching for doing something that will result in a divorce :)

The tank I'm looking at is a 2000x600x600 item. It would seem that LEDs are definitely the way to go with regards to long term affordability, even though it's moer of expensive to start off with.

    According to Rapidled's (w * h) / 18 formula (for sps), I would need roughly 100 LED's.

    Ouch.

I'm thinking of going with 6x 20" heat sinks with splash guards, but I'm a little bit lost as to how to divvy up the LED ratios.

I'd probably go with around 80 LED's to start with, something like 40 white, 20 blue, 10 royal blue and 10 UV. Although this is nothing but "that seems about right" speculation.

I don't want my tank to be too blue - I would like it to be bright and natural looking, with rich colours throughout the spectrum, especially the reds, greens and yellows. It should also be able to support SPS for one day when I'm all grown up.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

    Thanks!
    Riaan

I went through the entire process over a year ago.
By the time that you have bought all your LEDs drivers and heat sinks, you could have bought a completed unit for a extra 2k or 3k.

There are some guys that have build fantastic units, so not trying to discourage you.

Well, I've been advised that I would need 3 to 4 off-the-shelf units (i.e Radions) to cover my 2m tank. At R7K a pop.... I don't think it comes even close. I can light up my whole tank for the price of one Radion.

Radions are very expensive, have you looked at Vertex?

Just keep in mind, that these completed units have controllers build in. These controllers will do some fancy tricks.

Have you planed how you would control your LED unit? Dimming drivers etc?

For now I just need lighting that isn't going to make my DB box glow red. Analog dimming is fine.

You can always look at max spect razors... I think @bryan from jungle aquatics has them on special at the moment... I bought the 16k model and I've never seen light look soo good.... Plus he ships, for free! Give him a call, I'm sure he got some 10000 kelvin units left! The price actually ended up being cheaper than DIY due to the units being on special...

Problem is I'll need two of them, which kills the prospect.

Believe me, you'll wanna safe yourself time and money... If your looking at a 100 LEDs, that's $4-5 a pop... Plus shipping plus drivers plus equipment plus controller plus your time, and then hoping you don't pop the LEDs whilst doing the DIY... But that said, I'm not a DIY guy...
