I have been umming and aaahing about upgrading to LED's a lot lately, doing the usual toss up between DIY and ready made etc.

I bit the bullet today when I saw TSR advertising a 2nd hand Solarmax unit so went to visit @Submariner to have a chat and walked away with a new unit due to the excellent pricing. I was a bit sceptical that 36W's could replace the wattage of my current lighting but thought at the price the worst would be adding a second unit considering it is modular.

I unfortunately don't have a PAR metre but do have a Canon DSLR so decided to take some pictures with identical settings on a tripod so the differences can be visually seen. Please excuse the algae, re-scaping and cleaning it all up tomorrow.

My original setup was a Dymax 4x24W T5 unit with two Sylvania Coralstars and two Sylvania Aquastars. This was supplemented with a 20 000K BLV 150W DE HM in a floodlight fitting for 2 hours a day.

Considering the Solarmax is only 36W's I am extremely impressed and happy with the purchase. The unit also has a built in controller that needs an addon to be configured which I am sure I will be purchasing in the near future.

Oh, I haven't had much time to play with the height of the Solarmax so I may be able to get better penetration by moving the unit closer, it is mounted quite high at the moment for best distribution. The unit is only 310mm long and my tank is 700mm, the unit came with 60 degree optics (can be changed) so will need to play with the height to see what works best.
