does anyone have info, contacts, pricing, plans on how to go solar on marine tank lighting, maybe starting with one panel and sizing up when finances allow?

I stand to be corrected, but you'll probably pay less to build a small power station in your back yard, panels are extremely pricey and you'll habe to cover your roof, never mind the cost for the plenty battries to store power.

The best would be to rather use a runroof?

What you could do - is have an inverter system which the panel charges & run lights off that. you would charge the 12v battery & they should work - you would only be drawing power for 12 hours or so.

I was interested in doing that as well for energy saver outside lights.

Lets get some prices on panels & see what it will cost? we would need 150W panel or there about.

Just done a google and got a estimate price of about R31 to R34.5 per Watt just for the Panel. This excludes any batteries and inverters.

Eg, if you were to power just 2x 54W T5 lamps you would need a pannel rated about 120W (conidering there is no power loss, which there will be). 120x R31 = R3720, and it could only power it up under full sun.

Basic kit that would only run 5x 14W bulbs for 4 hours would cost about R10 000.:(
