Hey guys, I'm in Bali at the moment and am physically almost fainting seeing the amount if LR just lying around on the beaches just outside my door..

Now let's say, hypothetically speaking of course, that some found its way into my luggage (around 5 - 6 kgs of brilliantly red pieces).

First, is it illegal to carry it in your luggage back to SA? And second, would the scanners be able to pick it up in between clothing?

I'm going to act dumb if they enquire anyway..

It is illegal to bring it in. Most likely illegal to remove it as well.
Scanners will definitely pick it up.
Rather leave it on the beach.

you will land up in jail, its a biological element and can show up on the scanners, and not to mention it requires a CITIES permit

My son found a piece of rock he liked in Thailand he slipped it in his back pack did not say a word to me until we landed and showed me it, saying "look dad i have gold" it was from the beach and sparkled.

I have put a few small pieces in my luggage before as well no issue....yes its illegal but so is drinking and driving (2 beers boys)
    So is speeding…
So is passing on a solid white line when the car in front is doing 20
So lets all be responsible. And look at the glass house around you and put the rocks down

I brought back a piece of rock from thailand, decent size piece. It was dried, dead rock i found on the beach(stunning piece). I put it into my checked-in luggage, no problems.. I'd be lying if i said i wasn't nervous though..
