I am busy converting a 4ft tank into a skinny overflow and was wondering what the normal distance was to have the overflow lip from the top of the tank. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Express Reef, but I have gone thru this thread and it doesn't give any recommended dimensions?

depends on your return pump rating and width of your overflow. Rather go wider, and the water head will be less.

Plus depending on if you want to use overflow teeth or not. Normally 30 to 40mm would be OK.

Thanks Riaan. I have got a ctc so am sure it is wide enough. Have gone with 30mm from the top and will see how this works out.

What is the recommended width of the overflow ? The distance between the back glass and the overflow divider (if that makes any sense). I was thinking of 8mm and the ctc will be 1000mm in length. Is that too much? Should it be 5mm ? Worried that if it is too much it will create a noisy waterfall effect

It will create the waterfall noise, does not matter if 5, 8 or 10mm.

10mm should be OK. With 10 it will give the bulkhead fitting space plus enough of an opening to allow water in. Will need to sand the fitting down thinner.

    Hi guys
Where can I find the skinny overflow bulkheads, my local pvc supplier doesnt keep them, also a common name of the bulkhead will assist.

Thanks to most of the advice on this forum, I've made a skinny overflow that's 400mm wide with a 10mm gap that is 50mm from the top of the tank but my tank is small at 600mm wide.

I've got a ball valve plumbed off the back with full siphoning and it's dead-quiet because I've managed to dial in the water level inside the overflow so that is sitting around 30mm just below the DT water level.
