Contrary to popular belief, I'm not ashamed to admit that I do use a protein skimmer. It's in my quarantine tank, which brings me to this point. Why do suppliers of copper based medications say that you should switch your skimmer off during treatment? Skimmers don't remove inorganic compounds, so why switch it off? In my opinion, leaving a small quarantine tank without any filtration or waterchanges for 10 days is not helpfull in curing a weakened fish. The copper will kill all of your aerobic bacteria won't it? This leaves no filtration at all, allowing ammonia to build up surely?

PS. to all newbies: NEVER ADD COPPER MEDICATION TO A REEF AQUARIUM!

Mudshark, I ran tanks on copper in the past with the use of a skimmer and the fish all recovered from white spots and other fungal diseases. I did notice that the skimmate was actually blue in color. Now i dont know if it was skimming the actual copper out or just the dye.

Well, nobody seems to differ, so I take it it's better to leave your skimmer running whilst dosing copper medication?
