Hi guys. I've seen skimmers called recirculating skimmers and they are generally more expensive.

What's the diffs between that and a normal skimmer? And what does it exactly do?

A "normal" skimmer pumps water and air into the skimmer chamber at the same time. On a recirculating skimmer the skimmer pump sucks in water from the skimmer chamber, adds more air to it and pumps it back in. You have to either use another pump to "feed" it or hook it up to the overflow.

No idea why more expensive as there's like a max of R50 more worth of parts used.

Okey, so in other words a recirculating skimmer is just a skimmer with a "turbo" on, as it has another pump to give it more oxygen?

Is it really that much more effective in smaller - non fish intensive tanks? (compared to the price diffs of course...)

Well generally recirculation skimmers can be setup externally, as opposed to "normal" skimmers which have to be run in sump. If sump space is at premium then a external or recirculating skimmer would be a better option. Due to the dynamics of a recirculating skimmer, with one pump purely creating bubbles and recirculating the bubbles in the reaction chamber, they are touted as being more effecient.

On a small tank if space is not a problem an internal[normal] skimmer is fine.
