    Hi Guys and Gals,

I have been following the rule of "get a skimmer rated for double your system volume."

If you had the option of getting a skimmer rated 3 times your system volume for the same price as getting the 1.5 - 2 times would you get the bigger skimmer?

What got me thinking further is, it seems to me that some branded skimmers are known to be over optimistic versus actual performance. Whilst on the other end some manufacturers are more stringent and realistic on their ratings.

So can this rule of thumb still be followed?

yes, proteinskimmers at best remove 2-5% proteins anyway :) what we want from them is the DOC removal and having more DOC's removed means cleaner water, far easier to dirty water then keep it clean.

    get biggest you can afford

Go big or go home. You can always turn in down if you think its over skimming, bit harder to increase performance of an under sized one.

I don't believe you can easily over skim ( it takes so much more then people think to over skim a closed system) so I say yes.
