    Howsit Guys,
Great forum you have going here.

I bought a 2nd hand set-up. The guy was running the skimmer from the uplift pump. After this pump started making some strange noises, I decided to buy a new uplift pump and smaller pump for the skimmer. Its a Boyu Skimmer and Seio 1800LPH pump. When I however connected it, the skimmer was no longer skimming/bubbling. The water just fills the skimmer and flows into the cup (top). No bubbles/foam at all. I tried the old pump (4300 LPH) and a power head which did not help. I also connected a ball valve, thinking that the flow might be too high which also didnt help.

Has anybody had similar issues? Do I need a new skimmer?

    Thanks
    Dawie

    Hi,
Thanks for the response. The skimmer has two knobs which adjust air intake. I have played with these settings which did not make any difference.

Well, to be quite honest, the boyu skimmer are quite crap. What size tank are you running and as previously asked, what is the model number of the skimmer?

If the new pump does not have the right impeller its useless for a skimmer. I did not know that Seio made return pumps? I think you are using the wrong tools for the job.

Hi, so you saying I should let it run for a coupla days?

@ Marius, there is alotta info on Seio pumps on this site. research and my a LFS suggested that this would work. Thanks for your useless comment none the less!!!!

The Boyo skimmer has been performing well. Water paramters are within range! So for now I dont see a need to upgrade. Will do so down the line though!

Look dude, I am not the one who is having issues with a skimmer that does not work. All I did was give you advice on potential problems. But since you know best, all the best on your journey.

The thing is Marius instead of telling him he has a crap skimmer rather give advice on the problem he has at hand. if you dont know what the problem can be then why make a comment? let alone a comment like that. Not everyone does this hobby to the extreme like some of the guys here, some guys just do normal setups but still enjoy the hobby.

No harm intended with this msg just wanted to give my opinion because i have seen many comments like these on this forum where by guys tell people to get R1000's of rand worth of equipment to do the same thing that something cheaper would do all for the status of saying i have a R4000 skimmer. Im not saying this is you in no way im just once again giving my opinion.

    Happy reefing :)

    Dawie, 2 things.

1.) Whenever I do anything to my Dymax Skimmer it takes a few days to get going properly again. That includes bubbles etc but if you are getting zero then you have issues. You should be getting a few bubbles at least. If you are then also check the airline going to teh pump to see if its blocked.

2.) Is this a venturi skimmer that relies on the pump for air bubbles? If it is, then Marius is quite correct. You need a special pump designed for the job for it to work. I've also bought a pump before intending for it to be used on my skimmer only to find out it doesnt have a air pipe entry and the impeller is designed to push water rather than create bubbles. Its now being used to move water for my water changes :p

I would listen to Marius, he has helped me out many time sin the past ;)

Thing with skimmers guys is that the cheaper units are a bitch to work with and get to work properly. Take it from someone who has 4 cheap skimmers :p

Shew, why ask for advice if you gonna shoot the guy down. Marius' tone may be a little wonky there, but the actual advice is far from useless.

And @So Sick- Im yet to see a R4000 skimmer get outperformed by a R500 skimmer on a consistent basis.

Dawie, what is the size of your system?
Is the skimmer you got, the right size for the job?

Do your pump got the correct impeller. Is it actually sucking air in? What happens if you blow on the air intake pipe, does the air come through? Do the pump have enough pulling power to pull air down?
