What effect does depth have on a skimmer pump's air intake??

Would it draw more air if its shallower as opposed to deeper?

Im thinking along the lines of a meter long snorkel, it takes alot more suction to pull in air the deeper the snorkel goes, correct?

Agreed, but what about the back/head pressure on the pump in the skimmer if it were really shallow...? Would that not reduce the water flow rate, and thus also reduce the air suction...

Thats what I was thinking, do you have to find a balance or is one more significant than the other?
