    My skimmer has stopped procucing skimate. The supply pump and recirc pumps are both working as one would expect. Plenty bubbles but not waste.

    What could cause this?

    hi, looking at your thread, awesome setup by the way...

    i was going to say no waste to remove, but it could still be that, try feeding a fatty food, frozen krill or fish roe and see if any skimmate forms

    Dallas thanks for the kind compliments. With my GHA problems i’ve reduced feeding to once a day and I’ve stopped feeding frozen seafood mix. I’m sure my GHA problems are linked to the mix. I was wondering if alkalinity or salinity being to far out of spec could cause it. Test results from last night Salinity 1.024 alk 420 PH 8.4 tested last night which sound ok to me.

    Maybe I’m been a little neurotic with the GHA problems that I’ve been having:)

    PO4=0
    NO2=0
    NH3/4=0
    NO3=12meg/l

    NO3 high hoping scrubber will deal with it. will carry out another 100litre water change fresh seawater this weekend as well.

    Our skin produces oils which effect skimming performance when messing around in the tank.

    Possibly some oily residue in the water, Smartegoutte...... Oily residue sometimes causes skimmers to stop producing foam. But, this does not last long. Usually only a few days at most. Then the skimmer "recovers" on it's own.

    If you really WANT to, you can wash your skimmer out with some white spirit vinegar.

    some might, but pvc weld, tangit and silicone are safe

    if anything they should cause more skimming

    My skimmer was producing bubbles, but not nearly half as much as it should have been producing, and hence it wasnt producing a lot of skimmate.

    I discovered 2 issues 1) small snail shells had blocked the skimmer pump inlet 2) the venturi was blocked.

    Once i unblocked that venturi, the difference was remarkable.

    Give that skimmer pump a good clean, and check both ends of the venturi are free of blockage (usually salt creep).
