    Helooo all reefers,

Looking for some good advice on the following. Is there any reason why skimmers are run in the first chamber and not in the last with the return.

Looking at a sump setup with 3 chambers. IN - DSB - RETURN. Won't you get a better
and faster established DSB if you move the skimmer to the last chamber with the return. I'm seeing it like this. A skimmer in the 1st chamber before the DSB will skim out a lot of beneficial material that may be good for the DSB's growth and 'performance'. Also, if you have micro algae on top of the DSB. Will it not help in better growth resulting in better breakdown of toxins?

Why must skimmer be in 1st chamber? - Biological/Natural Filtration

Thing is, in last chamber you will remove beneficial stuff your DSB releases (like eggs and larvae) that you display could have used.

Before, as you said, you remove food from the DSB. Also DSB should create low oxygen for the bottom part of DSB to function for what we want it for. But now we are using oxygen enriched water from skimmer to enter the DSB, duh!

So both options got its negatives.

So skimmer before got its negatives,
and skimmer after got its negatives.

    So where must it be?

The general rule of thumb for ideal filtration is:

    First. Mechanical filtration - skimmer
Second. Biological filtration - DSB, Refugium, Macro Algae etc.
Third. Chemical filtration - Carbon, phosphate remover etc.
