skimmer before dsb or after ?

    in this photo i have skimmer _ dsb _ return

    is it beter to have your dsb before your skimmer ??

    Although with the more modern filtration methods, i.e. solid carbon substrates, the old rule gets slightly confuculated. Biopellets and the like should be placed before the skimmer....

    Dimensions of sump is 1000x300x300

    First, get your skimmer. Make sure about the space needed to fit it in. Also take note of the height of the skimmer and make sure that you can take it out. Then I would make the first chamber 30mm max wider than what the skimmer footprint is, if you can take it out, else I would make it higher.

    DSB itself is 150mm deep. Judging by the design, the water above the DSB would be 50mm deep. Can work and there are guys who have it like that example @Adee. On my sump, the water level above the DSB is 250mm. Personal choice I think.

    Return chamber should be big enough to be able to handle 2 days of water evaporation in case the ATU stopped working for what ever reason. Easy to work out. Take total system volume. Evaporation is about 10% a week, so that gives you the L you need to top up. Divide by 7 multiply by number of days you can leave the tank on its own. Default 2 for a weekend get away. That is the amount of water that must be between the return pump and the actual water level in return chamber. As your sump is rather shallow, that means the last divider would be about 190-200 mm high. So if your last chamber do not have this spare capacity, that means you have to make it wider.

    The two dividers should be max 10mm different in height. Else you end up with waterfall effect and sand storms on you DSB. Water level in return chamber should not be very much lower than the level above the DSB. That would prevent bubbles being pulled down in the return chamber.

    Do you have space for RO chamber, even if its a separate plastic container. One that can hold at least 20L
