I have decided to build a sump for my Boyu tl550, my questions is "is there a specific size the sump must be for a 128L tank" or can the sump be any size?

What are you planning to put in the sump?

I am thinking my Skimmer, return pump, sand and live rock bed and filter bag inlet. I would also like to add a ATU. Would that be sufficient?

Then you can build a sump as large as what your space allows you. Most guys go for a 3 compartment sump, 1st for your skimmer, second (the largest) for your sand bed and the third for your return pump. You can place your heater in the first compartment. Try to keep it simple.

An effective sand bed needs to be at least the same surface area as your dt.
Rather keep things as simple as possible and not over complicate filtration

Are you going to drill the tank? or how do you plan to move the water between the tank and sump?

I will be drilling the tank. My thought was a hole in the back wall on the bottom of the overflow compartment and one in the top in the return compartment. Does that sound right?
