I have a Hailea 6530 it's about 5 months old, which I am using for my return pump. This thing sounds like a tractor, I have another one for my nano and it now and again starts sounding like a tractor.

    I have a few questions:

    1. Are these makes of pumps notoriously noisy?
    2. Is there anyway to make them less noisy
    3. If there isn't a way to make them less noisy what are the better makes out there of the same capacity and more silent?

What's weird is if I kill the power (to do maintenance etc) and then turn the power back on it's silent for about an hour then starts vibrating \ humming all over again.

It's the nosiest part of the tank otherwise the tank would be close to silent :)

    Thanks for the advise!

i had a hailea was also loud. Got me a Tunze return pump cause i could hook it up to a battery or mains incase of load sheadding. The added Bonus was that the pump is silent!

Tagging along on this one. I've got the exact same pump as a feed pump for my skimmer, and it does exactly the same..... So I guess it is save to say these pumps have a reputation...

Howzit! Most of the time the pump vibrates on the glass it rests on. The pump should come with rubber grommets or suckkers. It should help a lot! Otherwise cut yourself a small rubber mat to place it on?

Tunze Aqua Africa probably 1073.020 - under a grand

Eheim have a look at this site http://www.marinedepot.com/pumps_eheim_universal_hobby_powerheads-ap.html

My return is 3000 l eheim, my skimmer is tunze, not bad as it is second hand, much mite silent than reef octopus, actually only hear the bubbles. My 3000 lt was about R 700, can't recall from which shop I ordered it from but our sponsors will stock both.

So yup silent in my own experience.

Mine too, got myself a eheim, half the size and whisper silent! Use my Haliea for water changes and mixing salt.
My Eheim 3000+ was expensive, but worth every cilent, oops I meant cent!:tt2:

I've never had trouble with mine and is super quiet. Eheim and Tunze are first prize but the pump must still be under warranty. See if there isnt anything caught in the impeller blades or if the pump is dirty or vibrating against something. If not take it back for a replacement.

I run a SICCE Extrema pump (2,500l/h 2.5m 32w), on a 50cm water hight, through 8 elbows, two valves and a chiller and it is dead silent.

Had some noise initially and figured out it is the corner of the unit touching the glass, moved it slightly and now is is nearly completely silent.

Not cheap, paid around R850 for it.
