hi guys i have bought 4 of these sieo prop pumps during my reefkeeping.
they are expensive and neat with the magnet mount system.
however, 3 of which are do not like starting.

all of them i maintain and clean every month.

now the issue is when i plug them in they clatter around and never start. this is very irritating for a powerhead that costs so much!

    anyone have the same issues??
and how did you solve the problem?

I had 2 die on me. Not even changing impellors worked. They are nice though.

What size you got Furbs? I bought 4 Seio prop 530's beginning last year. One or two sometimes made that clutter sound as if the polarity reversed on the magnet as it couldn't decide which way to turn as the impeller was jumping back and forth.
Some of them stood for 5 months when I packed up for the move.
It just went away and is now running lekka in my new tank for a month now - don't know why?

SEIO's are well known for their clatter during startup, what you can try do is sort of pump water into the front of the pump by waving your hand backwards and forwards quite vigorously. Apart from that I don't know, increase your cleaning time from every 1 month to 6 months. I really don't think pumps need to be cleaned every month, unless they are covered in algae growth.

Found the following to work on the small ones. Mine did exactly the same, just keeps on clunking and not blowing. Took apart and replaces the impeller with a spare I had lying around. Worked immediately. So conclusion it had to be the impeller. Took out the working one and saw the magnet moved independently from the blade (not talking about ceramic shaft). Took the one that was not working, cleaned in vinegar as the blade and magnet was not moving. Replaced and works perfect.

The old pumps used to clutter on startup Dean, not the new prop ones. My prop ones would do this clutter thing while running smoothly already, you can see the flow going back and forth at the suction side as if the impellar is jumping like I mentioned. I used to squirt air into the suction side with my turkey baster and it seemed to work. Now, for some reason they don't do it anymore :)

Interesting! I ordered 2x SEIO 1500 props about an hour ago ... Hope I don't have these issues ... Maybe I should have splashed out and bought Tunze?

I got 2 of these powerheads and it cltters only on startup and freaks out everything in my tank - I found a soulution which works the charm - NEVER let it switch off and it NEVER makes the funky noise...but seriously, I appreciate that noise because about every 2 or 3 weeks I switch it on and of a few times in quick sucsession and this crazzy rattle going bazzerk sound actually cleans the inside of it to save me from stripping it. If it looks nasty on the outside I brush it off with a baby bottle brush which I use to clean all the stuff around my tank - it works a treat for getting up the neck of my T1000 skimmer cup...the brush however has no bearing on weather or not the power head makes a noise, just thought I would share some absolutely random info just because I was typing and it came to mind ;)

    no. no controller...

they are the baby props. the smallest ones. and 3 out of 4 is very poor for such a pump.
anyone know sieo sa number or email address?

i want to give them a call and see what they think is the issue.
and if they have a solution.
maybe i can send the unit to them so they can test it.

cos mine dont start at all.
    they just sit and clatter.
i can get them to start by pulling them half out the water. but they only run for an hour before the same issue comes up.
