Just thought id mention some info I came across today. I dont have the specific article at the moment but this is something to be aware of. When making the cheaper versions of some of the supplements ammonia is used as part of the process and as a result the products not intended for the aquarium market have a high ammonia content resulting in tank crashes if dosed heavily. Please note that not all processes use ammonia but it pays to be careful

Would love to read the article if you can find it. Cause as far as I can see the commercial supplements use the exact same chemicals, just their own mixture of them. And stuff you get from the grocery store should be fine as I doubt they would be safe or human consumption if they contained high ammonia levels.

Apparently there are different purposes and manufacturing processes.

You would really have to go cheap before you are going to get ammonia within additives.
Unless you use industrial grade chemicals, you should be fine....
(Any quality better than BP grade is completely safe.)

True... But if you buy for eg. Magnesium sulphate (epsom salt)... The only places in ZA that would sell it is Chemical wholesale companies & pharmacies. & they already sell it dirt cheap (& its rather good quality), & thats all 100% safe for aquarium use...
Just trying to say that you would really have to go out of your way to find something thats not aquarium safe...

Nowadays, im more of a "think for myself" reefer than a "someone else - prove your theory before I believe you".
Thus the reason for me having so many "test tank".
By testing everything in a test tank before using it in my reef tank, I save myself a lot of trouble & learn/discover for myself without standing the chance of losing livestock...

    Understood!
Yip, marketing "stunts" is mostly glorified lies to make money out of something thats only worth a fraction of what they charge for it. Sad part is the companies dont actually give a damn about the causes of the product as long as they get the money for it... Right?

That article states salt mixes as a source of ammonia. Does that mean I should not do a wc?

However that does not detract from the concerns I have regarding cheap chemicals that may or may not be suitable for dosing in aquariums.
