    Hi there

I have a 250l Red Sea fish tank which for the last few months has been going good. However over the last few weeks we've lost a couple of fish. The fish are getting there flesh eaten away or scratched off.

We have bought some medication to treat a bacterial infection as this is what we've been told it most likely is.

Is the meds enough as not to infect my other fish. I have Also just bought a small ibox nano to hopefully use as a quarantine tank, do I just put my sick fish in it, with the water from my tank. Please any help much appreciated.

    Kind regards

Btw will try and post some pics.

    Zakiyya

Hi, can you post a pic of your sick fish, then we can more easily reply. Difficult without pics. When fish have itch they normally scratch them self on the sand bed. Do you see any white spots on them. Your nitrite levels did you test it.

hi zakiyya (welcome to masa I dont think ive welcome you before:))

That certainly sounds like a serious problem and needs addressing right away. there can be a number of cuases for fish getting leisions and sores, bacteria being a definate possibility, although stray volltage or parasites, wrong SG etc etc etc can all play a role. I would hesitate to medicate untill i knew what was the actual cause and suggest you spend some time to try figure that out.

A picture is worth sevral thousand words in a case like this, but so are a full set of parameters so that we can see what condition the water is in. Generally (loosely speaking!) disease outbreaks like this are due to poor environmental conditions and stress (water conditions) so we need to rule that out as soon as possible. Do you have test kits? Are they in date? Can you give us full parameters (or as many as you can.

    But def:
    Temp
    SG
    No2
    No3
    Po4
Amonia, Amonia and once more Amonia.

a hospital tank would be a great idea, and a quarenteen system is always advisable. Try get some pics for masa even if its of a dead fish showing the effects which has lead to death.

Hopefully with more infor guys on here can help:)

What type of rock do you have in your system? My guess is that there could be a hitchicker crab that is hurting them. While the fish are in quaranteen I would suggest rebooking at your rock to see if there is one or one of those predatory worms (cant for the life of me remember its name right now).

Good luck and hope your fish get better soon!

What fish do you have and do they show any signs of aggression towards each other?

apologes for the late reply. my chromis died this morning and i took it to the local pet store who diagnosed its death as fin rot. she advised by treating with pronto marine this will hopefully kill off the infection and stop it from attacking my other fish. i have attached some pics of my tank and the chromis before it died so others can be aware of the issue.

sorry, i was just thinking between yesterday when the pictures the fins appear good, the only symptom that we noticed yesterday was the sore. could my prawn or something have eaten the fins after it passed away or does the fin rot happen so quickly.

Fin rot = disintegration of fins this sounds like a bacterial infection

Hmm I would treat the fish in a separate tank with seachem kanaplex.

This however is normally secondary to a primary cause (parasitic infection like monogeneans(flukes), ich or bad water condition or treatment with copper. )

Remember antibiotics will kill your bacteria in your display tank if you dose it in there!!!
