    hi all

    ive had this candy cane coral for almost two years... when I firs got it it was just a single polyp and till now has been growing steadily spliting heads every few weeks..

    about two or so weeks ago it started sulking and not bringing out its feeding tentacles at night... before it would look like a sea urchin after lights out... after remaining shrivelled for about a week I noticed that the flesh that would link up the branches together is peelings off and only the flesh around the individual heads remains... you can see on the pictures below..

    I keep my parameters stable. .. with slight diference in Alk sometimes... between 9 and 8.5... I cant measure for calcium because I was unlucky to land with one of the faulty batches of Red Sea test kits and havent replaced it since... but the last time I mesured using my friends Salifert test kit it showed calcium of 480ppm .... magnesium of 1360... salinity of 0.025 and temperature of around 25-27 .... will colect my chiller soon. my nitrates are 2 and phosphates 0.03 or just about..

    I have a 13000 lph wavemaker on the one side of the tank that is constantly on creating a rather laminar flow wich would always blow on the coral from one side but its been like that for almost a year and although one head on one side did not seem very happy it was carring on and growing normaly. .. since this problem started if switched off the 13000lph pump and now rely only kn the MP10 for flow... naturaly my SPS frags are not very excited about that.

    is this normal due to the heads growing apart and needing to compleatly separate from each orher or is there something else..

    thanks for your help... ill post the pictures from tapatalk right now.

    yes in my tank I have a torch coral wich is doing fine as ever ... and all all my other corals as well... its only this particular one...

    the other thing is that recently just before this started I added a aptaisa eating filefish that besides all the aptaisa in my tank also mapped 70% of my zoas... sonce them the file fish is in the sump... but the candy cane is not getting better

    To me it looks like tissue necrosis. Idonie dips is the only thing I can think of that you can try to stop it. You could try fragging it in the good flesh, but not guaranteed to work

    Unfortunately the list for necrosis is possibility endless from a bacterial infection to parameters to temps

    yes I do... I have one cabbage coral (brown) and a toadstool with very short tentacles. .. recently tjo I cant rember me and @Fraser W fraget the short tentacle toad stool... it stays in direct line with the curent that would reach the candy cane... so if it released something in the water it would reach the candy cane directly. .

    also I have a lumo green cabbage coral that I got from fraser recently and at first it wss doing well but now it has a brown algae looking covering and to day I notices that in one corner its gone rotten so I cleaned it with a tooth brush. .. However I had to clean it in the tank as its attached to a rock

    @HOT SAUCE
    how is the candy cane doing?
    I have seen something similar happening in my tank and couldn't figure it out but someone recently told me that it could be due to the large pin cushion in my tank. I will post the vid/article on it when I find it. Maybe it is something similar that is happening to yours with the leathers in the tank (especially if it was fragged recently)?

    Are you running carbon?
    Please ping me if I forget to post the vid, brain is not used to remembering stuff lately :p
