My only issue is that it has been suspended for 5 years, meaning if he is convicted under the same act within the next 5 years, only then does the fine kick in... ***

Is this so that he can build up the money for the fine?

Well if he was doing this intentionally then he deserves it,I mean what does he get out of it just bragging rights?

An animals life for bragging rights is so 18th century colonial thinking when "beasts" were plentiful, theres no place for barbarism like that in 2013 with dwindling wildlife numbers!

Yet we keep reef tanks:whistling:, do you think we have no impact on the reefs?

there is alot of hype about this if you read the comments below the article BUT there is no real detail to whatever went on here..

to put it in perspective, people do fish for sharks for fun and as a sport, while i myself have experienced shark fishing i am not too taken by the sport.. i have my own opinion about shark fishing..

but if he intentionally went out and sought after a GW then i think that given that it is a protected species he got the right punishment (i would assume that the law factored in that it could have been a mistaken catch) the fatigue of catching such a shark is actually very real and getting it in is extreemly hard work! and a white doesnt just come straight in! (i am assuming as i have seen sharks such as zambezi's and hammerheads put up hours of fighting)

the issue is the animal is stressed and exhausted and even if released there is no gaurantee to say it survived the ordeal!

i have even heard of raggies (which are mild and actually a dead weight to pull in) dying of stress due to being caught!

I have nothing against responsible fishing and can understand the arguement that the shark may have been caught accidentally.
What i disagree with is how he handled the shark knowing that is is a protected species. He could have found a better place to get the shark out the water instead of dragging it across the rocks and posing so proudly with it shows shear arrogance. It really is a pity that the court gave him a suspended sentence.

Even before you land you fish you can see what kind of fish on your line. A meter or two standing on the rocks he could see its a shark and the spesie. He could cut his line, no goeing to all afforts to land the shark on the rocks. Any shark for that matter, they dont eat sharks.
