    The aluminium foil behind the lights act more like a diffuser instead of a reflector, due to all the crinkles in it. Rather replaces it with a proper reflector. Even just painting the canopy inside white will give better reflection results.

    Else use Alanod. highly reflective material.

    50mm or 75mm white PVC cut in half makes for better reflectors than the tin foil. But as Riaan said, Alanod is the best option since it is the same material that most commercial reflectors are made from. It is just not that easy to get hold of.

    Hi guys.. haven't updated in a long time.. I'm planning to do an overflow but I'm thinking on doing something that could be easier.. I'm planning on drilling a hole in the tank and connect a pipe directly from the tank to the sump so the water free falls.. would this be a problem??

    Hi all. I've been busy the last couple of weeks. So I'm now ready to start working on it again. Can you guys help me??
    I want to do an in tank Herbie overflow like @ajbalie here's his tank thread.. https://www.marineaquariumsa.com/threads/my-first-marine.73496/ ..
    I'm going to use 32mm pipes.. I'm not sure if they are that width because that's the measurement from the outside.. the measurement from the inside is 25mm..
    And I'm using a 1200L return pump.. would I be safe with my overflow???

    All help and critic appreciated..
    Regards

    I prefer all my plumbing to be 50mm. OK, it is more bulky but I can get the parts everywhere. OK, ballvalves in 50mm sizes are really crazy. Although you do get cheaper ones meant for swimming pools.

    On 1200L/h, the 32mm pipe would be able to handle the flow.

    On the type of overflow that I'm going to do?
    And by 32mm do you mean the measurement from the tube inside or the outside of the pipe?

    Regards

    outside, 32mm

    I'm not a fan of that type of overflow. On 32mm pipes you are looking at a linear 100mm length or distance or width of a overflow, if you make the pipe flat. That is theoretical the length you need on a straight overflow to handle the same volume as the pipe. Depending on return pump, you might end up with a rather high water head, that could suck over smaller fish. Using some guard to prevent that will only increase your water head and increase the change of sucking enough to trap smaller fish like clowns.

    I will go with the outside, as in his thread, but on the inside fit a slimline overflow box with minimum width of 200mm. That will already drop the water head by half. 300mm wide overflow will still work. Only issue could be placing the slimline overflow box under the tank bracing. As that will make it difficult to get any critter that went into there, out. And I will make the slimline box internal space 20mm. Further changes and you can put a overflow box on the outside, no bulkheads between tank and overflow box, with the slimline overflow inside. Then drill the bottom of the outside box, fit the bulkheads there. Lot easier to install, easier to seal. Then you are more towards the Bean Animal overflow design than a Herbie.

    Plus putting a piece of black ABS sheet against the slimline overflow box will hide it a lot more than those two bull horns sticking out in the tank.

    Slimline box inside. Overflow box outside. OK, this one sits on the short side of the tank. Can just as well be at the back. Bean Animal works with 3 pipes.

    Thanks @RiaanP . I will see what I can do.. I don't have much space for an overflow box but will see.. would I be ok with the water head if I can get 45mm pvc?

    C=πd
    or
    C=2πr

    C would be your linear length if it was a straight overflow.

    And when you refer to water head.. what do you mean??
